Introduction

HISTORICAL REGIONS

TERRITORIAL IDENTITIES OF EUROPE

The basic layer for the European territorial palimpsest is provided by its historical regions, upon which (the boundaries of) (administrative) regions, (sovereign) states and/or (international) macro-regions are constructed, generally overlapping each other and occurring simultaneously at different levels of identification

IdEnt lists and describes those territorially defined (id)entities of Europe – including information on the organizations with a territorial [id]entity at the heart of their remit

> LIST

Those (id)entities are situated on country maps and additional maps for those historical regions straddling two states or more

> MAP

Guidance with using IdEnt is provided with a description of its subject, the structure within which the data are presented as well as the kind of information that is given, besides a description of the relevant concepts, a list of sources and the formal systems applied here.

!MARK!

This website is under construction!

An 'abecedarian' list has now been completed (see LIST).

However, with only occasionally an entry promoted to the stage B (the basic version) and also the help pages (maps, search and guide) momentarily only available in a skeleton version, none of the content on this website is already fit for purpose.

But work has now started to lift all entries to at least the B- or C-stages (see the GUIDE for a description of the different stages i.e. versions). This is being done one state at a time. For the moment the following states have already reached the basic level ("B"): Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Ukraine.
